Green Your Fire: Inside MTN Bushfire’s Bold Push to Become Africa’s Leading Eco-Festival

MTN Bushfire Festival has reaffirmed its ambition to become Africa’s leading sustainable festival through a suite of eco-conscious initiatives unveiled ahead of its 2026 edition.

The event, set for 29–31 May at House On Fire in Malkerns, is positioning sustainability at the core of its operations and audience experience.

The 2026 theme, “The Juncture of Hum,” signals “a deliberate step toward a bold vision: to be Africa’s leading sustainable festival,” emphasising that environmental responsibility is being embedded across all festival zones.

Among the key initiatives is the “Transforming Waste to Worth” programme, led by the Green Team. The festival will implement a three-bin waste separation system, encouraging attendees to actively participate in recycling.

“Through a simple three-bin system, you do more than clean, you engage with a creative solution to protect our planet,” noted the festival's communications team, adding that waste will be processed through licensed recyclers into new usable materials.

The return of the Green Superheroes, interactive performers introduced in 2025, will further drive behavioural change. Described as “captivating performances that challenge us to rethink our impact,” the initiative blends art with environmental advocacy to inspire festivalgoers.

In addition, the festival is promoting sustainable mobility and energy use. Organisers are encouraging the use of park-and-ride shuttle services and carpooling to reduce carbon emissions, alongside harnessing solar energy and energy-efficient technologies on-site.

Co-Founded by Jiggs Thorne, MTN Bushfire has grown into one of Africa’s most celebrated cultural events, blending music, arts and social activism. Its sustainability efforts have earned international recognition, including a feature on CNN Inside Africa and accolades such as the 2025 Temvelo Award for Green Business.

“These are not just accolades but a positive nod to our efforts and a challenge to do more,” noted the team, underscoring the festival’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
